Weeke North America was established earlier this year as a joint venture between the Homag Group, Stiles and Weeke Maschinenbau to manufacture the Vantech series of routers.

Bill Miller, CAE, executive vice president of the Woodworking Machinery Industry Association, announced his retirement effective December 31. Miller will retire after a distinguished career in association management, culminating with his nearly 10-year tenure with WMIA.
“When WMIA decided to opt for its own management, there was no space for mistakes. Bill was the experienced well navigated manager WMIA needed” says Giordano Checchi, a past president of WMIA. “He proved to be a professional of high value. We wish him all the best in his retirement, though WMIA will miss Bill's quiet wisdom, thoughtful diplomacy, and discreet leadership.”
He will be succeeded as executive vice president by Rainey Smick, currently associate executive vice president for the organization. Smick can be reached at rsmick@wmia.org or 410-628-1970.

Stiles Machinery is pleased to announce that Stiles Education now provides training that is in compliance with the woodworking industry’s skill standards as developed by the Wood Career Alliance of North America (WCA).
The WCA skill standards were developed to provide a means for employers, employees and educational institutions to determine at what level a worker should execute tool and machinery set-up, operation and troubleshooting. Skill standards range from properly feeding material to performing complex troubleshooting. During Stiles Education classes, students are taught how to operate machinery at a level to meet the published skill standards, which validates their ability to produce work at a required complexity or quality.
Duane Griffiths, Manager of Educational Services for Stiles, states that companies from all sectors of the wood industry, small and large, need employees that meet these standards. This will better assure employers that personnel can successfully complete their job assignments, increasing a company competitive edge.

Stiles Machinery is pleased to offer classes in Spanish for employees who work on edgebanders.
Stiles Education is also offering EB102S "La Operación y Mantenimiento Preventivo de Las Aplacadoras de Cantos Homag" ("Operation & Preventative Maintenance for Homag Edgebanders"). Taught in Spanish by a bilingual instructor, students will learn how to maximize the capabilities of medium- to large-sized, single-sided edgebanders. Classroom and hands-on exercises will teach students about rapid changeovers, proper maintenance procedures, edgebanding materials and adhesives, troubleshooting and safety.
The course is designed for Spanish-speaking machine operators, quality control technicians, engineers and production supervisors. The first session starts October 6 at Stiles’ Irving, Texas facility. Stiles Machinery Inc. is pleased to share that Danville Community College is opening a Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology.
According to Gerald Sexton, the Instructor/Coordinator at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology, Danville Community College will be opening their Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology to support local furniture and wood products manufacturers in the region. This will be a one-of-a-kind program in collaboration with three local high school systems, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and Virginia Tech Department of Wood Science.
Mr. Sexton states that this is a true 2+2+2 program, offering career opportunities and degrees from the high schools all the way through a four-year university. Danville Community College is a licensed WoodLINKS USA site and is currently developing partnerships with other companies which support the wood industry such as Stiles. The official ribbon cutting will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 9. WoodLINKS Student Named Grand Prize Winner in 2009 Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge Woodworking Competition. A graduating high school senior in a WoodLINKS program at Cedar Ridge High School, Hillsborough, NC, was awarded the $3000 Grand Prize in the 2009 Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge at a July 16 presentation held in Las Vegas during the AWFS® trade show.
Andrew Prioli earned the top honor for “Inverurie,” a walnut dining room table with inlays of curly maple, cocobolo, maple burl and walnut burl veneers depicting three stallions and Celtic knots. Certainly Wood, distributor for the project, received a cash award of $2000, and salesman Jim Carroll received $1000, in recognition of their participation in the supply chain.

Steve Harrod was promoted to Systems and Purchasing Manager based on his knowledge of the internal systems of the Parts Department. Harrod has been with Stiles since February 1986.

VT Architectural Wood Doors Meet CARB Phase 1 Regulations - The first phase of The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products, Section 93120 took effect January 1, 2009.
This regulation requires all composite woods and finished products containing composite wood being sold in California meet formaldehyde emission standards. Phase I requires all particleboard formaldehyde emission levels to be less than 0.18 part per million (ppm). This phase also requires MDF formaldehyde emission levels to be less than 0.21 ppm.
VT Industries Inc. has been in contact with their composite wood suppliers about this matter and are currently manufacturing doors using composite wood products that meet the CARB Phase 1 regulation. This includes all flush, stile & rail and profiled doors product offerings.

Stiles Machinery is pleased to announce that Stiles Education now provides training that is in compliance with the woodworking industry’s skill standards as developed by the Wood Career Alliance of North America (WCA).
The WCA skill standards were developed to provide a means for employers, employees and educational institutions to determine at what level a worker should execute tool and machinery set-up, operation and troubleshooting. Skill standards range from properly feeding material to performing complex troubleshooting. During Stiles Education classes, students are taught how to operate machinery at a level to meet the published skill standards, which validates their ability to produce work at a required complexity or quality.
Duane Griffiths, Manager of Educational Services for Stiles, states that companies from all sectors of the wood industry, small and large, need employees that meet these standards. This will better assure employers that personnel can successfully complete their job assignments, increasing a company competitive edge.

Stiles Education is also offering EB102S "La Operación y Mantenimiento Preventivo de Las Aplacadoras de Cantos Homag" ("Operation & Preventative Maintenance for Homag Edgebanders"). Taught in Spanish by a bilingual instructor, students will learn how to maximize the capabilities of medium- to large-sized, single-sided edgebanders. Classroom and hands-on exercises will teach students about rapid changeovers, proper maintenance procedures, edgebanding materials and adhesives, troubleshooting and safety.
The course is designed for Spanish-speaking machine operators, quality control technicians, engineers and production supervisors. The first session starts October 6 at Stiles’ Irving, Texas facility. Stiles Machinery Inc. is pleased to share that Danville Community College is opening a Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology.
According to Gerald Sexton, the Instructor/Coordinator at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology, Danville Community College will be opening their Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Wood Products Technology to support local furniture and wood products manufacturers in the region. This will be a one-of-a-kind program in collaboration with three local high school systems, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and Virginia Tech Department of Wood Science.
Mr. Sexton states that this is a true 2+2+2 program, offering career opportunities and degrees from the high schools all the way through a four-year university. Danville Community College is a licensed WoodLINKS USA site and is currently developing partnerships with other companies which support the wood industry such as Stiles. The official ribbon cutting will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 9. WoodLINKS Student Named Grand Prize Winner in 2009 Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge Woodworking Competition. A graduating high school senior in a WoodLINKS program at Cedar Ridge High School, Hillsborough, NC, was awarded the $3000 Grand Prize in the 2009 Veneer Tech Craftsman’s Challenge at a July 16 presentation held in Las Vegas during the AWFS® trade show.
Andrew Prioli earned the top honor for “Inverurie,” a walnut dining room table with inlays of curly maple, cocobolo, maple burl and walnut burl veneers depicting three stallions and Celtic knots. Certainly Wood, distributor for the project, received a cash award of $2000, and salesman Jim Carroll received $1000, in recognition of their participation in the supply chain.

VT Architectural Wood Doors Meet CARB Phase 1 Regulations - The first phase of The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products, Section 93120 took effect January 1, 2009.
This regulation requires all composite woods and finished products containing composite wood being sold in California meet formaldehyde emission standards. Phase I requires all particleboard formaldehyde emission levels to be less than 0.18 part per million (ppm). This phase also requires MDF formaldehyde emission levels to be less than 0.21 ppm.
VT Industries Inc. has been in contact with their composite wood suppliers about this matter and are currently manufacturing doors using composite wood products that meet the CARB Phase 1 regulation. This includes all flush, stile & rail and profiled doors product offerings.
